To truly follow through on achieving our goals we need coaches and friends to guide, motivate and support us. Without it, people don’t stay accountable to the journey and they give up. Kyp Kotzikas

Head CrossFit and Strongman Coach / Owner

Has nine years experience as a CrossFit trainer with a background in weightlifting, powerlifting, basketball, and rugby. He brings 9 years experience as a CrossFit Trainer and Strength and Conditioning Coach to the box plus Kyp holds a CrossFit Level 1 trainer qualification, as well as certificates in Olympic Weightlifting, Strongman, Gymnastics, and training of Power Athletes.

Kyp believes that CrossFit is a state of mind and encourages members to tune in to their own goals in order to achieve success.

Gemma Root

Manager / CrossFit Coach

Gemma’s experience comes from a very high-level competitive background in CrossFit. She has competed at the World CrossFit Games, CrossFit Regionals, and current Sanctional events; in both the team and individual divisions. With a broad understanding of what is required to be a high-level athlete, Gemma also has a fierce passion for helping people improve their general health and fitness, so they can be the best mother, father, friend, partner, sister or brother; that they can be. The reason why she coaches is purely because she wants everyone to experience what it is like to have self confidence, to love their bodies and be proud of who they are and what they are capable of, and to have belief in their strength and themselves.

Kelsey 'Kels' Rigler

CrossFit Coach

Kels grew up in Canada, but, is proudly working his way to becoming a NZ Citizen.

Kels has a very particular set of skills. He will find you and he will make you better at whatever it is that you want to get better at. Fitness, is all about the process to him. He has 4 years of experience working in a variety of settings as a strength and conditioning coach with hundreds of athletes ranging from a community to professional level in multiple sports with an additional year (+) of accumulated experience as a CrossFit Coach. He’s incredibly passionate about helping people get stronger than they could ever possibly imagine and about using his skills to get people back to performing or continue performing at an optimal level via performance based rehab/prehab.

Kels’  “why?” involves empowering you to live your best life through fitness. He believes that every person has the right to live life to the fullest potential. Fitness and training are the tools that he uses to drive you to accomplish that. Whether you’re looking to climb a mountain, compete, be fit enough to be an effective leader, partner, mother, or father- his philosophy is all about empowering you to achieve your maximum potential and get the most out of your life. It’s a never ending journey and process that involves continuous refinement. So buckle up and enjoy the ride, he’s here to help you get after it team.

Education: BSC-Exercise Science with a Major in Sports Performance, CF-L1, Accredited Strength & Conditioning Coach NSCA & ASCA, International Strength Coach- Eleiko, and many other certs.

Fitness Experience: Bodybuilding x 3 years, Powerlifting x 3 years, CrossFit x 1 ½ years.

The thing I love most about coaching is building relationships and being part of people’s journey to live a strong, healthy and happy life. Also the challenges that come with being a coach allow me to grow and develop as an individual, constantly self-reflecting, learning and adapting. 

 I love the people at CrossFit Trailblazer.Having fun when working out is all about the people your sweating besides and at Trailblazer there are a lot of fun people to work out with! Also at Trailblazer there’s such a great variety of people and fitness levels. I love that! 

My previous experience is in swimming. I have done competitive swimming for about 14 years. Besides that I’ve played basketball for about 6 years. In both those sports I used to coach as well (for about 3 years).  I started CrossFit in 2017 when I moved from The Netherlands to Christchurch. After trying a couple of other sports that didn’t quite work out CrossFit turned out to be a great fit for me! I joined Trailblazer a year later and started coaching a year and a half ago.

I have been doing CrossFit since July 2015. So coming up to nearly 5 and a 1/2 years training and the last 16 months have been at Trailblazer. Throughout this time, I have been coaching for about 1 year 9 months, the last 9 being within Trailblazer.

I love CrossFit because it is a constantly varied physical and mental challenge, that forces me everyday in training to think about how I approach challenges. This transfers to my life outside the gym in what affects my physical and mental performance in the day to day life. The flip side to this is the community aspect that comes along with sweating and suffering with a group of dedicated people. You get to experience people from all walks on their fitness journey and hold each other accountable to your training. I love coaching CrossFit because I get to see people enjoy their best hour and successes on the day to day. I genuinely just enjoy seeing people make progresses in areas they originally thought themselves not capable of.

Lydia Hira

CrossFit Coach

Lydia is a mum of 3 and has been a big part of our CrossFit Trailblazer family for 3 years. Trained and developed by Kyp himself, Lydia completed her CrossFit Level 1 in 2018. Lydia has a background in gymnastics and netball and shares a deep passion for working with women and mums to build a healthy, balanced and sustainable lifestyle that compliments our busy life. Lydia has this to say about coaching…” I love to coach absolutely everyone in our community and I believe it’s not how much you train but how you train. It’s so important to train with intention and what you achieve from CrossFit all depends on the commitment your willing to make. I encourage people to move well consistently and I love seeing people tick of their goals as they progress through there lifelong CrossFit journey.” Education: CF L1
